Forgive me if I come off as an idiot for asking this but I am only a teenage girl so forgive me: Not everything in Russian is in roman lettering, correct? Or does the language have it's own characters (symbols) as Japanese and Arabic do?

Yes, it does. The Russian alphabet is called Cyrillics and it's used in some other Slav countries.
