Could anyone please help with the translation of a letter from my wifes side of family any part would help. We are trying to find out what happened to his son.

It is not in Russian. Maybe, it is in Serbian?

As you can see, this site deals with Russian and Ukrainian languages.

You can try to post your letter at www.proz.com   There are translators in many languages at the site.

it is  either  Polish or Checz or some Byelorrusian but I  could  recognize some words and guess some
