I am translating a newspaper article and this one sentence has confused me somewhat...

хотя о том, что он лишен свободы, узнает никто кроме самых близких людей..

does anyone have any idea what this means? does хотя here still mean "however" or does its meaning change due to the "о" following it? Thanks in advance
