My grandmother and mother used to use the word "newsh-dah" (phonetic) to mean leftovers.  When I try to search now for the Russian meaning I'm coming up with obyedki, ostatok, or lerezitok.  My mother says the word we used was Russian, but she does not know what it actually meant.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

The word in Russian is НУЖДА which basically means "hardship" or "poverty." There are several other meanings, all expressing the need of something.
